“Respetos a Ben Aipa”
Ben Aipa, uno de los artesanos de tablas de surf más influyentes en la historia del deporte, falleció el 15 de enero de 2021, tras una larga batalla contra la enfermedad de Alzheimer y los efectos de un derrame cerebral posterior.
Al crecer en Hawai, Aipa tenía pasión por el fútbol hasta que una lesión en el tobillo lo dejó de lado y comenzó a surfear a los 20 años. En 1965 había llegado a la final del Duke Kahanamoku Classic en Sunset Beach. Luego pasó a competir en los Campeonatos del Mundo en 1968 y 1970.
Las contribuciones de Aipa al desarrollo de tablas modernas de alto rendimiento no pueden subestimarse. Al recoger una cepilladora por primera vez en 1966, se sintió cómodo en la zona de modelado de forma inmediata. Para el 68 ya había dado forma a la tabla con la que Fred Hemmings logró la victoria en los Campeonatos del Mundo en Puerto Rico.
Es incomparable el shape que le dio “aipa” a los twin fish y a los single fins.
